Karlsruhe is located in the “Ober”- Rhine River Valley–or the “upper Rhein Valley”. Directly to the east of Karlsruhe are the foothills of the Blackforest and the Kraichgau.

Karlsruhe is at the center of this region on the “Ober”-Rhine River Valley. This center is one of 14 such areas, designed for provincial planning in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Furthermore, there are numerous interconnections with municipalities in the northeastern state of Rhineland-Palatinate and in northern parts of Alsace-Lorraine in the region known as Parmina.

Karlsruhe is Germany’s legal capital–it is home to the nation’s highest courts. Also based in Karlsruhe are the Senates of the Federal Supreme Court along with the Federal Constitutional Court, which regularly send important decisions with high precedence for the Republic of Germany.
